The resonator guitar was born out of necessity and became an icon of American roots music. Invented by John Dopyera in 1927 for musicians who needed more volume before electric amplification existed, its spun aluminium cone and perforated coverplate created a sound so distinctive — bright, cutting, metallic, and alive — that it defined the Delta blues, bluegrass, and Hawaiian slack-key guitar for generations. Son House played one. Bukka White played one. Blind Boy Fuller played one. When Robert Johnson recorded in a Dallas hotel room in 1936, the sound of the resonator was already the sound of the American South. This resonator guitar print from the Monochrome collection captures the cone, perforated screen, spider bridge, and strings in extreme close-up detail — a single shaft of light cutting across the metalwork, dust particles suspended in the air, the whole composition feeling less like a photograph and more like a memory of a late-night session in a room where something important happened.

The guitar that carried the blues before electricity existed to amplify it.
